Verity for e-commerce businesses

The order looked profitable. The return, the RTO and the settlement deduction were not.

An online seller makes or loses money after the customer clicks buy. Stock is shared across channels, parcels go missing, cash arrives weeks late and returns come back as a bag nobody counts. Verity ties every one of those events back to the order that caused it.

Verity in one line

One system that knows what you have, where it is, what came back, what the courier owes you and what each order really earned.

Free: we set up a working demo of your own business, on your own data, within 7 days. You pay only if your team decides to use it.

Your website and your marketplace accounts stay exactly where they are. Verity runs the work behind them.

How it runs today

Selling is online. Running it is still a lot of sheets and calls.

The orders arrive on their own. What follows does not. Someone updates stock on three channels by hand at night. Someone else chases a courier for a parcel that has not moved in six days. A returns bag is opened on Thursday for an order refunded on Monday. Cash on delivery money is sitting with the courier, and the marketplace payout is short by an amount nobody can explain.

Each of these is handled by a person with a sheet, a portal login or a WhatsApp group. The seller panel shows sales. The courier panel shows parcels. The bank shows money. Nothing shows the order from click to cash, so the real margin of a product is only guessed at.

The result is not one big failure. It is a hundred small leaks: an oversold unit, a refused COD parcel, a freight overcharge, a claim raised too late. Each looks minor and together they decide whether the month made money.

What most e-commerce businesses run on

  • Marketplace seller panels
  • Courier dashboards
  • Excel stock and returns sheets
  • WhatsApp with the warehouse
  • Accounting software

Each tool is fine at its own job. The gaps between them are where the money goes.

15 problems, one by one

Where an online seller actually loses money.

These are the situations sellers describe again and again. For each one: how it looks on an ordinary day, what it costs, and what Verity does about it.

  1. 01Stock

The same unit is sold on three channels

    What it looks like

You have 6 pieces of a kurta set. Your website, a marketplace and a quick-commerce listing all show 6. Four sell within an hour of a campaign going out. Two customers get a cancellation message the next morning.

    What it costs you

Example arithmetic: 40 oversold orders a month at ₹900 each is ₹36,000 of sales cancelled, plus marketplace penalties for cancelling and a drop in your seller rating.

    How Verity fixes it

One stock record per item, with units reserved against open orders from every channel. The stock screen shows what is free to sell on each channel, and a low-free-stock alert goes to the person who updates listings.

    See the screen
  2. 02Stock

Listings and codes do not match across channels

    What it looks like

One product is "KS-BLU-M" in your sheet, "KSBLUM01" on the marketplace and a different name on the website. A price change is made on one channel and forgotten on the other two.

    What it costs you

Wrong stock deducted, wrong price sold, and hours spent every week matching codes by eye before anyone can trust a report.

    How Verity fixes it

Each item is a single record with its channel codes listed against it. Orders from any channel land on the right item, and a list shows items whose price differs between channels so someone can correct them.

    See the screen
  3. 03Returns

Cash on delivery parcels come back undelivered

    What it looks like

A COD order is shipped to a customer who placed it on impulse. The courier tries twice, the customer does not pick up, and the parcel goes back to the warehouse nine days later.

    What it costs you

You pay forward freight, return freight and packing, and the stock is out of sale for two weeks. Industry estimates put RTO for Indian e-commerce at roughly 20 to 40 percent, with cash on delivery making up most returns.

    How Verity fixes it

Every RTO is recorded against the order, pin code, courier and payment mode. Verity shows RTO rate by each of these, so you see which pin codes and which couriers lose money, and can set a rule such as a confirmation call before dispatch for high-risk pin codes.

    See the screen
  4. 04Returns

Returned goods sit in a bag instead of going back on the shelf

    What it looks like

Returns arrive in a corner of the warehouse. They are opened when someone has time. A good unit stays unchecked for ten days while a customer buys the last one from the marketplace and you show out of stock.

    What it costs you

Sellable stock is invisible. The refund has gone out but the unit is neither counted nor resold.

    How Verity fixes it

A return is a record with a state: received, checked, resell, repair or write off. A checked unit goes back into free stock the same day, and units waiting more than three days appear on a list.

    See the screen
  5. 05Returns

Customers claim damage or a wrong item and you cannot tell if it is true

    What it looks like

A customer says the mixer jar arrived cracked. The marketplace refunds on a photo. You have no record of what was packed, who packed it, or whether the same item is being returned again and again.

    What it costs you

Refunds paid on claims you cannot dispute, and serial returners who stay unnoticed. For fashion and footwear, size and fit alone drive a large share of returns.

    How Verity fixes it

Return reasons are recorded against the item, the packer and the courier. Verity flags items, customers and couriers with unusual return patterns, and the packing check for each order sits on the order record as evidence.

    See the screen
  6. 06Delivery

Parcels stuck, delayed or lost, and the claim window closes

    What it looks like

A parcel has shown "in transit" for eight days. The customer writes in daily. By the time someone checks the courier portal, the period to raise a loss or damage claim has passed.

    What it costs you

A refund to the customer plus the value of the goods, with no recovery from the courier. One missed claim on a ₹2,500 parcel cancels the margin on about eight good orders.

    How Verity fixes it

Shipments with no movement for a set number of days appear on a list with the customer and value. A claim task with a deadline goes to the person who handles couriers, and the outcome is recorded.

    See the screen
  7. 07Delivery

Freight bills do not match what you shipped

    What it looks like

The courier invoice charges for 1.5 kg on a 600 g parcel because of volumetric weight. Nobody compares the invoice to the actual packed weight, so the invoice is simply paid.

    What it costs you

Example arithmetic: ₹18 of overcharge on each of 6,000 parcels is ₹1.08 lakh a month that never shows up as a line anywhere.

    How Verity fixes it

Each shipment records packed weight and dimensions. Verity compares them to the weight billed by the courier and lists the parcels where the difference is above your limit, ready to dispute.

    See the screen
  8. 08Money

COD cash is with the courier for weeks and the remittance does not tie

    What it looks like

You shipped 420 COD orders last week. The courier pays in lumps, with a statement that lists some orders and not others. Finance cannot say which orders are still unpaid.

    What it costs you

Working capital sits in a courier account. Parcels delivered but never remitted are quietly written off.

    How Verity fixes it

Every COD order carries an amount due. When a remittance arrives, it is matched against the delivered orders it covers, and the orders delivered but not yet paid are listed by courier and by age.

    See the screen
  9. 09Money

Marketplace payouts are short and nobody knows why

    What it looks like

The payout for the fortnight is ₹4.2 lakh against sales of ₹5.1 lakh. The settlement report is a spreadsheet of 6,000 rows with commission, fixed fee, shipping fee, returns and adjustments.

    What it costs you

Wrong fees, return deductions on orders that were not returned, and penalties that never get disputed. Reconciliation is skipped because it takes days.

    How Verity fixes it

Each payout is checked against the orders it should cover. The gap is split into commission, fees, returns and unexplained, and the unexplained rows are listed as items to raise with the marketplace.

    See the screen
  10. 10Suppliers

Best sellers run out while slow items pile up

    What it looks like

The supplier needs 21 days for the fabric. Your bestselling set has been out for two weeks. In the back room there are 300 pieces of a design that sold 12 last quarter.

    What it costs you

Lost sales on the products that earn the most, and cash locked in stock that will end in a clearance sale.

    How Verity fixes it

Each item has a sales rate and a supplier lead time. Verity shows days of stock left against the lead time and drafts the reorder before the gap opens, with supplier and expected date recorded.

    See the screen
  11. 11Suppliers

    Old stock is never reviewed

    What it looks like

Items bought nine months ago are still on the rack. They were written off in the mind of the buyer and never cleared. A new season design takes their shelf space.

    What it costs you

Money tied up in stock that earns nothing, storage fees if you use a third-party warehouse, and expiry for items with a shelf life.

    How Verity fixes it

Stock is shown by age and by how many units sold in the last 30 and 90 days. Items past your age limit are listed with a suggested action: markdown, bundle or return to supplier.

    See the screen
  12. 12Customers

Half the support messages are "where is my order"

    What it looks like

Three people answer chat, calls and marketplace messages. They open four panels to find one parcel. The same customer writes on two channels and gets two answers.

    What it costs you

Support hours spent looking things up rather than fixing problems, and customers who dispute or cancel because they could not get a clear answer.

    How Verity fixes it

The order record shows its status, courier, last movement and refund state in one place, with every message attached. Late orders are flagged before the customer asks.

    See the screen
  13. 13People

Wrong item packed, and no way to see who or why

    What it looks like

In a sale week, temporary staff pack 900 orders a day. A wrong colour goes to a customer and comes back as a return. There is no record of who packed the order.

    What it costs you

Freight both ways, a refund and an unhappy customer, repeated whenever peak load arrives.

    How Verity fixes it

The packing steps for each order are a short checklist on the record, completed by a named person. Wrong-item returns trace back to a packer and a shift, so training goes where it is needed.

    See the screen
  14. 14Compliance

Tax deducted by marketplaces does not match your books

    What it looks like

Marketplaces collect tax at source on your sales. At filing time, your accountant finds the amounts in the portals do not match the settlement reports, and spends days finding why.

    What it costs you

Credit claimed late or lost, and accountant hours billed at month end and again at year end.

    How Verity fixes it

Each order carries its value, channel and the tax collected on it, and the monthly summary by channel matches what the marketplace reports. Differences are listed so the accountant starts from the gaps.

    See the screen
  15. 15Owner

You do not know what each order really earned

    What it looks like

The sales figure looks great. After product cost, packing, freight both ways, marketplace fees, ad spend, returns and cash delays, some products and channels lose money on every order.

    What it costs you

Money keeps going into advertising products that look like winners and are not.

    How Verity fixes it

Each order is costed against its product, freight, fees, returns and the cost of getting the money. The overview shows contribution by product and channel so you can see where to push and where to stop.

    See the screen

  • 20 to 40%

estimated average RTO rate for Indian e-commerce, with cash on delivery making up over 60% of returns, according to a fulfilment company.

    Eshopbox, 2026

  • ₹32.8 lakh crore

IBEF, citing the Infisum report “Smart Growth in a Fast Market”, 2026

  • 0.5%

GST tax collected at source by marketplaces on the net taxable value of your sales, reduced from 1% from 10 July 2024. A separate 0.1% income tax deduction also applies on gross sales for many sellers.

How we work with you

We set it up with you, in four weeks.

You do not get a login and a manual. We learn how an order actually moves through your business, build Verity around that, bring your data in, and stay on to keep it right.

  1. Week 1

    Discovery and mapping

    What we do
Spend time with you, your operations lead and whoever handles returns and finance. Follow a few orders from click to cash and note every sheet and panel it touches.
    What we need from you
Two to three hours of your time, plus read access to seller panels, courier reports and your stock sheets.
What you have at the end
A written map of your order flow, your channels and couriers, and a ranked list of the leaks we will close first.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3

    Configuration

    What we do
Set up your items and channel codes, warehouses, couriers, return states, supplier lead times and the rules for RTO, claims and reorders. We also agree how orders, shipments and settlements reach Verity.
    What we need from you
Review the item list and return states with your operations lead. Correct anything we got wrong.
What you have at the end
A working Verity holding your items, channels and rules, ready for your history.
  3. Weeks 3 to 4

    Migration and training

    What we do
Bring in item masters, open orders, supplier terms, open claims and recent settlement reports. Train packers, support and finance on live orders at their own desks.
    What we need from you
Your sheets and exports in whatever shape they exist. One hour with each role.
What you have at the end
Your stock, returns and open cash in one place, and a team that has handled real orders in it.
  4. After go-live

    Operations partnership

    What we do
Review the first month of returns, claims and payouts with you, adjust the rules, and add channels or warehouses as you grow or run a sale.
    What we need from you
A short monthly review of the numbers.
What you have at the end
A system that keeps pace as channels and volumes change, with someone accountable for it.

Bring these on day one

  • Your item list with channel codes, even if it is a sheet
  • Recent settlement reports from each marketplace
  • Courier rate cards and recent freight invoices
  • Your return and refund rules as you apply them
  • Supplier names, lead times and last purchase prices

Your time

About 10 to 12 hours of your own time across the four weeks, mostly in week 1. Your operations lead and finance person need a few more.

After go-live

No one has to be hired to run Verity. Packing, returns and receipts are recorded as part of work the team already does.

Verity AI

Ask your business a question. Get an answer, not a report to build.

Verity AI reads your own orders, returns, shipment and settlement records. Ask in plain language, then turn the answer into tasks for the right people.

Rules and paperwork

The rules an online seller has to keep up with.

Verity does not give legal or tax advice and does not file anything for you. It keeps the order, return and payment records these rules depend on in order, so your accountant is not rebuilding them from panels.

  • GST tax collected at source

    What is expected

Marketplaces generally collect 0.5% of the net taxable value of your sales as GST tax at source, in place of the earlier 1% from 10 July 2024. You recover it through your own GST return. Many sellers who supply only within their state through a marketplace may not need GST registration, but inter-state sellers generally do.

    How Verity helps

Each order carries its channel, value and tax collected, so a channel-wise summary exists for your accountant to compare with the marketplace report.

    Patron Accounting

  • Income tax deducted by the marketplace

    What is expected

Marketplaces generally deduct 0.1% of gross sales as income tax on payments to sellers, with a threshold of ₹5 lakh a year for individuals who have given PAN or Aadhaar. The section numbers may change as the new Income-tax Act, 2025 takes effect, so check what applies to you.

    How Verity helps

Gross sales by channel and financial year are on one summary, so you can see where you stand against the threshold and match what is deducted.

    Patron Accounting

  • Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules

    What is expected

The 2026 amendment, effective 1 January 2027, asks for clearer disclosure of return, refund, warranty and delivery details, and for any reduced price to show the lowest price of the previous 30 days. Details for sellers (as opposed to platforms) are best confirmed with an adviser.

    How Verity helps

Return and refund terms, price history and complaint records sit on the item and order records, so there is something to show if a customer or regulator asks.

    LiveLaw

  • Customer data

    What is expected

Customer names, addresses and phone numbers are personal data. India’s data protection rules were notified in November 2025, with most duties starting over the following 12 to 18 months.

    How Verity helps

Customer details live in one permissioned place, with who viewed or changed them recorded, rather than in exports shared on WhatsApp.

Rules change and differ by situation. Confirm current requirements with your accountant or the relevant authority.

Who sees what

Everyone sees the same records, through their own window.

A packer does not need to see margins. Finance does not need to edit stock. Each role opens on what it needs.

  • Owner

Straight answers

What changes, and what stays the same.

Keep using

  • Your website and marketplace seller accounts. We agree how orders reach Verity during setup.
  • Your courier partners and their panels. Verity records what they report.
  • Your accounting software and your accountant.
  • WhatsApp and phone for talking to customers and couriers. Staff send, Verity assigns and records.

Verity does not

  • Run your website, take orders or process payments.
  • Send messages to customers or couriers on its own.
  • File your GST or income tax returns.
  • Replace your accountant or your marketplace support.

We bring your item list, open orders, supplier terms and recent settlements across from the sheets and panels you use now, in stages, so shipping continues while we do it.

Questions

Questions online sellers ask.

Do I have to move my store or leave my marketplaces?

No. Your website and marketplace accounts stay where they are. Verity is the operations system behind them, and we agree during setup how orders and reports reach it.

Can Verity update my stock on every channel by itself?

Verity holds one stock count and shows what is free to sell on each channel. How that number reaches each channel is agreed during setup. Where it cannot be automatic, it becomes a task for the person who updates listings.

I am a small seller doing 60 orders a day. Is this for me?

The leaks are the same at a smaller size, with less spare time to notice them. We set up only what you need, and the four-week process is the same.

Will it reduce my RTO?

Verity does not change what customers do. It shows where RTO happens by pin code, courier and payment mode, and lets you set rules such as a confirmation call before dispatch. Whether that helps depends on your orders.

Can it raise courier claims for me?

It finds the parcels that qualify and creates a claim task with a deadline. Your team raises the claim with the courier and records the result.

How does it handle COD cash?

Each COD order carries an amount due. When a courier remittance arrives, it is matched against the delivered orders it covers, and unpaid orders are listed by courier and age.

Who can see my sales and customer data?

Only the people you allow. Access is set by role, so packers, support, finance and your accountant each see what they need, and every change is recorded with who made it and when.

Can I run it for a sale like Diwali with temporary staff?

Yes. Temporary packers get a simple role with their own checklist, and you can see errors by person and shift. We plan the busy season with you in the weeks before.

What does it cost?

It depends on the number of channels, warehouses and users and what you want set up. Message us and we will give you a clear number after a short conversation about how you sell.
