Verity for pet stores

A pet store sells food that expires and animals that need care. Neither can wait for a quiet week.

A pet store carries bags of food with dates on them, medicines with batches, and sometimes live animals with feeding times and health records. It also keeps a registration current, runs grooming slots and delivers heavy bags to people who buy the same brand every month. Verity connects the shelf, the animal, the pet owner and the paperwork, so you can see what is about to expire, who is due a reorder and what an inspector would ask for.

Verity in one line

One system that knows every batch and its expiry, every animal in your care, every pet owner’s regular order and every certificate and renewal, and tells you what needs attention today.

Free: we set up a working demo of your own business, on your own data, within 7 days. You pay only if your team decides to use it.

Built for a shop where the owner is also the groomer, the stock-taker and the one answering the phone. Records come from the sales, deliveries and care tasks you already do.

Watch

Verity in retail and commerce

Shelf counts, billing and stock, shown the way a store lives them.

35 seconds, no sound. An illustrative film, so the scenes are examples, not customer results.

How it runs today

Most pet stores run on love for animals and a notebook for everything else.

The shop is easy to see. A queue for food on Sunday morning, a puppy in the window, a groomer with a poodle on the table. What is hard to see is everything behind it: which sacks of food are three months from expiry, which animal is due a vet check, which customer has not reordered their dog’s food in six weeks, and whether the registration certificate is current.

That information exists in pieces. The billing screen knows sales. Distributor invoices carry batch numbers that nobody records. Animal health is in a notebook or in the keeper’s memory. Grooming slots are on a wall calendar. The owner holds the rest.

The business is growing and getting more contested. Industry estimates put India’s pet population at about 42 million in 2024, with offline stores still taking most of the sales, while quick-commerce apps deliver pet food in minutes. A store that knows its pet owners and keeps its stock fresh has something an app does not.

What most pet stores run on

  • Billing screen at the counter
  • Distributor invoices and delivery slips
  • Notebook for animal health and feeding
  • Wall calendar or WhatsApp for grooming slots
  • The owner’s memory of who buys what

Each one does its own job well enough. None of them talk to each other, and nobody has time to join them.

15 problems, one by one

Where a pet store actually loses money.

These are the situations pet store owners and managers describe again and again. For each one: what it looks like on an ordinary day, what it costs, and what Verity does about it.

  1. 01Stock

Food and medicine that expires on the shelf

    What it looks like

A distributor delivers twenty bags of a premium kibble and the best-before date is in four months. Another batch of tick and flea medicine is already close to its date. Nobody checks the shelf until a customer points it out.

    What it costs you

Example arithmetic: ten bags of premium food at ₹2,400 cost that go out of date is ₹24,000 lost, and a customer who is sold an expired pack does not come back.

    How Verity fixes it

Each delivery records the batch and expiry date by item. Verity lists stock by nearest expiry, flags batches 60 and 30 days from expiry, and suggests a markdown, a bundle or a return to the distributor where the terms allow, with an owner for each.

    See the screen
  2. 02Stock

Premium and prescription diets that sit unsold

    What it looks like

A vet recommends a special diet and you order a pallet. The vet moves, the customers stop, and the bags sit. Another brand pushes a new line and you take a stock of every flavour and size.

    What it costs you

Slow stock is cash you cannot spend on the brand that sells, and diets with short dates become losses fast.

    How Verity fixes it

Verity shows days since the last sale and value held, by brand, flavour and pack size. Slow movers are listed with a suggested action, and reorders for a brand are checked against how fast it really sells.

    See the screen
  3. 03Suppliers

Distributor prices, imported brands and short deliveries

    What it looks like

An imported brand raises its price after a currency move. A local distributor’s invoice lists twenty bags and ten arrive. The salesman visits, and the order goes by memory.

    What it costs you

Pet food is an input where imports matter. Industry reports describe growing import volumes, so rate moves reach your shelf quickly. You pay for goods that did not arrive and sell below the new cost without noticing.

    How Verity fixes it

Every purchase records the rate, batch and quantity actually received. Verity shows the price trend by brand and supplier, compares order, receipt and invoice and flags a mismatch before you pay, and shows which items now sell below your margin.

    See the screen
  4. 04Animals

Animal health records in a notebook

    What it looks like

A puppy has been in the shop for ten days. The vaccination date, the deworming, the feeding and the last vet visit are in a notebook that one staff member updates. When she is off, nobody knows what has been given.

    What it costs you

A missed vaccination or a repeated dose is a risk to the animal and a risk to the sale. A buyer who asks for the history and gets silence loses trust.

    How Verity fixes it

Each animal is a record with its source, date in, age, health checks, vaccinations, feeding and vet visits. Verity shows what is due today and who is responsible, and the history is ready when a buyer asks for it.

    See the screen
  5. 05Animals

Selling the right animal at the right age, with the right paper

    What it looks like

A customer wants a puppy now. The puppy looks fine. Staff are unsure of the exact age, whether a vet has checked it and what paperwork the buyer should receive.

    What it costs you

Selling an animal that is too young or not checked is a welfare risk and a legal one. A sold animal that falls ill in a week returns as a dispute.

    How Verity fixes it

The animal record shows its age, the vet check and the conditions you set before a sale. A sale cannot be marked complete until the checks are done, and the buyer’s details and handover are recorded on the same record.

    See the screen
  6. 06Animals

Sick animals, isolation and quiet losses

    What it looks like

A rabbit stops eating. A bird sneezes. A new arrival is put next to the others because there is no space. A week later three are unwell and nobody can say which came in first.

    What it costs you

Losses are the most expensive item in a store that keeps live animals, and they are rarely counted. One illness that spreads can empty a whole row.

    How Verity fixes it

New arrivals are recorded with an isolation period and a keeper. Illnesses and treatments are logged against the animal, and Verity shows losses by source, species and month so a bad supplier or a bad arrangement shows up.

    See the screen
  7. 07Animals

Daily feeding, cleaning and temperature rounds that exist only if someone remembers

    What it looks like

Feeding, water, cage cleaning and tank checks are done by whoever is free. On a busy Sunday one is skipped. There is no way to say who did what.

    What it costs you

Skipped rounds hurt the animals, and when something goes wrong you cannot show what was done.

    How Verity fixes it

Each round is a task with a person and a time, signed off at the shop as it is done. Verity shows what has been missed, and the record exists for a vet or an inspector to see.

    See the screen
  8. 08Compliance

    Registration, inspection and renewals

    What it looks like

The pet shop registration certificate is in a folder. Nobody is sure when it needs to be reviewed or renewed. A state board announces a registration drive, and you are not sure you meet each condition.

    What it costs you

A shop without a valid registration can be closed or sealed. In November 2024 the Delhi Animal Welfare Board gave pet shops and dog breeding centres one month to register or face closure.

    How Verity fixes it

The registration, each premises, its validity and its review date are records with an owner and a date. Verity raises a task before a renewal or review, and the daily care records and animal histories are ready if an inspector asks.

    See the screen
  9. 09Pet owners

Customers who buy the same food every month and then vanish

    What it looks like

A man buys a 15 kg bag of his dog’s food every five weeks. This month he has not been in. A quick-commerce app is cheaper and faster, and he has tried it once.

    What it costs you

Example arithmetic: 200 regular food buyers each spending ₹2,800 every six weeks is about ₹4 lakh a month. Losing one in five without noticing is ₹80,000 a month.

    How Verity fixes it

Purchases link to a pet owner’s record with the pet, the brand, the pack size and the usual gap. When a regular passes their gap, they appear on a list and a task goes to the person who knows them, with the reorder one call away.

    See the screen
  10. 10Pet owners

New puppy and kitten owners who are never followed up

    What it looks like

A family buys a kitten and its food. The second vaccine, the deworming and the switch to adult food all come within months. Nobody from the shop reaches out, and the family buys from the nearest vet or app.

    What it costs you

A new pet owner is the start of years of food, toys and grooming purchases. A shop that helps at the right moments earns them.

    How Verity fixes it

Each pet carries a care timeline from its birth date or purchase date. Verity lists owners with a milestone in the next two weeks, such as the end of the vaccine course or the switch of food, and a task goes to the person who sold the pet.

    See the screen
  11. 11Services

Grooming slots on a wall calendar

    What it looks like

Grooming slots are written on a calendar. A walk-in clashes with a booked dog. A customer does not come and the groomer sits idle for an hour. A long-haired breed needs two hours and was given forty minutes.

    What it costs you

A groomer is paid for the day. An idle hour is lost, and an overrun means the next customer waits and complains.

    How Verity fixes it

Grooming is a schedule per groomer, with the breed, the service, the estimated time and the owner’s contact. No-shows are recorded on the customer, so repeat cases are visible, and a reminder task goes to the counter the day before.

    See the screen
  12. 12Services

Heavy bags to be delivered, and nobody keeps the list

    What it looks like

A customer asks for a 20 kg bag and a litter pack at home. The order is a phone call. The delivery boy has five drops and a bike, and nobody knows who has received what.

    What it costs you

Missed or late deliveries, mixed-up orders and a customer who calls three times. Home delivery is often the reason a pet owner stays with you and not an app.

    How Verity fixes it

Each home delivery is an order with the items, the address, the window, the person carrying it and the status. The counter sees what has left, what has been delivered and what is late.

    See the screen
  13. 13Money

Credit and special rates for breeders, trainers and vets

    What it looks like

A trainer buys food for twenty dogs every month on a promise. A breeder gets a special rate. A vet clinic takes supplies and pays at the month end, if at all.

    What it costs you

Example arithmetic: ₹60,000 of such credit outstanding for 60 days ties up cash you need to buy next month’s food.

    How Verity fixes it

Each trade buyer is an account with a credit limit, invoices, due dates and balances. Verity shows what is owed and for how long, and gives the owner a task to chase on the schedule you set, with each promise recorded.

    See the screen
  14. 14Money

Competing with apps on price without knowing your margin

    What it looks like

A customer shows you a lower price on an app and asks you to match it. You do, without knowing what the bag earns you. Quick-commerce apps are growing in pet food while stores still hold most of the sales.

    What it costs you

A price match on a thin-margin item can mean selling at a loss, and a wrong match repeated across a month is a real number.

    How Verity fixes it

Every item carries its purchase cost, so margin is known per item and brand. Verity flags a price match below your floor, asks for approval above your limit, and shows margin by category so you can decide what to match and what not to.

    See the screen
  15. 15Money

Day-end takings do not tie to the bills

    What it looks like

At closing, cash, card and UPI are counted against the billing report and are off by a few hundred rupees. Nobody can say whether a bill was missed, a refund was given or a grooming payment was recorded elsewhere.

    What it costs you

Small daily gaps compound, and the owner stops trusting the numbers on the screen.

    How Verity fixes it

The day’s sales and service payments by payment mode are compared with what was collected. A mismatch is flagged with the shift and amount, and the person closing records the reason.

    See the screen

The numbers behind it

The numbers that make these problems worth fixing.

From published sources, with the source named under each figure. Your own numbers will differ, and showing you yours is the first thing Verity does.

The pet population and market figures are estimates from a trade publication, and other publishers give very different numbers because they count different things. The ₹5,000 fee is from a 2018 report and may have changed, so confirm it with your state board.

An ordinary day

The same Sunday, before and after.

What changes is not the animals or the food. It is that the day leaves a record, and the record does the chasing.

WhenTodayWith Verity
9:00 TodayYou open up and feed the animals. You are not sure which bag is near expiry. With VerityThe Today screen shows the nine bags expiring in 41 days, and a markdown is already suggested.
11:00 TodayA buyer asks for a puppy’s vaccination history. You search a notebook. With VerityThe puppy’s record shows each vaccine and the next one due, and the buyer gets the history.
1:00 TodayA regular has not been in for six weeks. You do not notice. With VerityHe was on the list last week, the counter called, and his usual bag is booked for delivery.
3:00 TodayA groomer’s next customer does not come. The hour is lost. With VerityThe reminder task the day before flagged a repeat no-show. The slot was offered to a waiting customer.
7:30 TodayYou count cash and UPI against the bills. It is ₹260 off. With VerityVerity shows the one grooming payment that does not tie, and you settle it in a minute.
Month end TodayThe accountant asks for purchases and what is owed to you, and a vet asks for an animal’s history. You look through folders. With VerityEvery delivery was matched when it arrived, trade balances are listed by age and each animal has a record.

How we work with you

We set it up with you, in four weeks.

You do not get a login and a manual. We spend time in your store, build Verity around how your pet store really runs, bring your data in, then stay to make sure it keeps working.

  1. Week 1

    Discovery and mapping

    What we do
Spend a Sunday morning and a quiet weekday in your store. Watch how food arrives and is shelved, how an animal is looked after and sold, how grooming and deliveries are run, and note which leaks matter most.
    What we need from you
Two to three hours of yours and your manager’s. Access to your billing reports, a month of distributor invoices and your animal notebook.
What you have at the end
A written map of your store: the product range by brand and pack size, your suppliers, your animals and their routines, your services and the first leaks we will close.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3

    Configuration

    What we do
Set up your items with batch and expiry fields, reorder points, suppliers, animal records and care tasks, sale conditions, grooming schedules, delivery steps, trade accounts and licence records, and build the six screens around your own terms.
    What we need from you
Check the setup with your manager and your groomer. Tell us where a care step or a rule is wrong.
What you have at the end
A working Verity with your real items, animals, services and staff, ready for your data.
  3. Weeks 3 to 4

    Migration and training

    What we do
Bring in your stock with expiry dates, customer contacts and their pets, trade balances, animal records and licence details from the sheets and notebooks you use. Train the counter, care and grooming staff in the store during a real shift.
    What we need from you
Your customer list in whatever form it exists, an opening stock count with expiry dates and the animal notebook. One hour with each role.
What you have at the end
Your stock, pet owners and animals inside Verity, and a team that has used it through a busy day.
  4. After go-live

    Operations partnership

    What we do
Stay on after launch. Review the first weeks with you, tune the expiry alerts and reorder points, and handle changes when you add a brand, a service or a new premises.
    What we need from you
A short monthly review of what the numbers say.
What you have at the end
A system that keeps matching how the store runs, with someone responsible for it.

Bring these on day one

  • Your item list with prices, and expiry dates for what is on the shelf now
  • A month of distributor invoices
  • Your customer list, even if it is phone contacts
  • Your animal notebook and your registration certificate
  • Your grooming price list and delivery routine

Your time

About 8 to 10 hours of your own time across the four weeks, mostly in week 1. Your manager and groomer need a few more.

After go-live

Nobody is hired to run Verity. Sales, deliveries and care are recorded as part of work the team already does, and the reports come from those records.

Verity AI

Ask your pet store a question. Get an answer, not a report to build.

Verity AI reads your own stock, animal, customer and service records. Ask in plain language, then turn the answer into tasks for the right people.

  • Your records only Answers come from your own pet stores data, not from generic knowledge.
  • Right person, right view It only shows what the person asking is allowed to see.
  • Turns into action An answer can become a task assigned to a named person.

Verity / Ask

What stock expires in the next 60 days and what is it worth?

14 batches worth ₹38,400 at cost expire within 60 days. The renal diet kibble and the tick and flea drops are the largest.

Rules and paperwork

The rules a pet store has to keep up with.

Verity does not give legal or tax advice and does not file anything for you. It keeps the records these rules depend on in order, so you are not hunting for them when someone asks.

  • Pet shop registration

    What is expected

Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018, anyone who runs a pet shop or trades in pet animals generally needs a certificate of registration from the State Animal Welfare Board, with a separate application for each premises. The certificate generally cannot be transferred and is subject to review. Reports differ on its period, so use the dates on your own certificate.

    How Verity helps

The certificate, premises, validity and review date are records with an owner and a date, and a task is raised before each one is due.

    Deccan Chronicle, 2018

  • Registration drives and sealing

    What is expected

State boards can require registration by a set date and close or seal establishments that have not registered, as the Delhi Animal Welfare Board did in November 2024 under the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017 and the Pet Shop Rules, 2018.

    How Verity helps

The registration record and the animal and care records are ready to show when the board or an inspector asks.

    DT Next, 2024

  • Conditions of sale and care

    What is expected

A summary of the rules from a state board says the sale of pregnant or diseased animals and of newborns before weaning, at about two months, is not allowed, and that a separate isolation area is needed. The rules also set basic amenities for animal welfare. Check the notified text for your species.

    How Verity helps

The animal record shows age, vet check and isolation dates, and a sale cannot be marked complete until the checks you set are done.

  • Dates and labels on packed pet food and medicines

    What is expected

Packed goods generally have to show the manufacturing date, and a best-before or use-by date where relevant, under the Legal Metrology packaged commodity rules. A pet food labelling standard also exists. Check that a pack you sell is in date and labelled.

    How Verity helps

Each delivery records the batch and expiry, and a batch near its date is flagged before it can be sold.

  • Customer data and consent

    What is expected

Phone numbers, addresses and details about pets are personal data. India’s data protection rules were notified on 13 November 2025, and most duties start in phases, with the main ones about 18 months later.

    How Verity helps

Customer data sits in one permissioned place, with who viewed or changed it recorded, instead of in personal phones and notebooks.

    AZB Partners, 2025

Rules change and differ by state, and the registration process runs through your State Animal Welfare Board. Confirm current requirements with the board, your vet and your adviser.

Who sees what

Everyone sees the same records, through their own window.

A groomer should not see everyone’s pay. The counter should not edit animal health records. Each role opens on what it needs.

  • Owner

Is the store making money, and are we in order?

Straight answers

What changes, and what stays the same.

Keep using

  • Your billing screen at the counter. We agree during setup how bills and payments reach Verity.
  • Your distributors’ own order channels. We record what you order and receive.
  • WhatsApp for customers, vets and distributors. Staff reply
  • Verity tracks who owes a reply.
  • Your vet and your accountant, who still do their own work.

Verity does not

  • Run your billing counter or take online orders.
  • Give veterinary advice or replace your vet.
  • Send messages to customers or distributors on its own.
  • File your returns or run your payroll.

We bring your stock with expiry dates, pet owners, trade balances, animal records and licence details across from the sheets, phones and notebooks you use now, in stages, so the store keeps selling while it happens.

Questions

Questions pet store owners ask.

I do not keep live animals. Is this still for me?

Yes. The stock, expiry, reorder and delivery parts work for a store that sells only food and accessories, and we leave out the animal screens if you do not need them.

Does Verity replace my billing system?

No. Your billing screen keeps taking bills and payments. We agree during setup how those bills reach Verity, which then does the stock, supplier, animal and customer work around them.

Can it track expiry dates?

Yes. Each delivery records the batch and expiry date, and Verity lists stock by nearest expiry and flags batches 60 and 30 days out, with a suggested action.

Does it replace my vet or give medical advice?

No. Verity records what your vet advised and when it is due. Decisions about an animal’s health stay with your vet.

Can it take grooming bookings or online orders?

No. If customers call or message today, that continues. Verity keeps the grooming schedule your staff fill and makes sure every enquiry has an owner and a next step.

I run two stores. Can I see them together?

Yes. Each is a location in one system, with stock, animals and sales side by side. Stock can move between them against a recorded transfer, and a pet owner is one person across both.

Does it help with the registration paperwork?

It keeps the certificate, premises and review dates as records with an owner and reminders, and keeps the animal and care records an inspector may ask to see. Verity does not file anything with the board for you.

Who can see my data?

Only the people you allow. Access is set by role, so counter staff, keepers, managers and your accountant each see what they need, and every change is recorded with who made it and when.

What does it cost?

It depends on the number of stores, staff and what you want set up. Message us and we will give you a clear number after a short conversation about how your store runs.
